Fat Transfer

Autologous fat grafting, more commonly known as fat transfer, is a surgical procedure performed under general anaesthesia that may be appropriate for those wanting a shape change for the body or face. The procedure begins with liposuction, where fat is removed from a donor area such as the outer thigh, flanks or abdomen. This fat is then harvested and processed to improve its longevity and viability before being reintroduced into targeted areas. Areas to be sculpted, ranging from breasts to areas of the face, are then treated with careful fat placement using specialised fine cannulas to restore volume and contours.

When applied to the face, fat transfer may assist in replacing age-related volume loss associated with reduced collagen and elastin production — two crucial proteins that support the skin's strength, elasticity and firmness. Common treatment areas include around the eyes, jawline and cheeks, where grafted fat can support volume, shaping and smoother transitions between facial zones. A key advantage of this body treatment procedure in Sydney is that it uses your own fat. Facial fat transfer does not require incisions in the face and generally does not result in visible facial scarring.

Another consideration in facial fat transfer is that stem cells are transferred with fat cells. Stem cells are the body's regenerative cells found in abundance within fat. Their presence may contribute to improvements in skin quality when introduced to areas that have lost volume, elasticity and firmness.

Fat transfer breast augmentation

Breast fat transfer can subtly increase the size of the breasts while contouring another area of the body during the liposuction process. Since the fat is transferred to the breasts using a controlled, minimally invasive technique, the scars are minor compared to other surgical procedures. Patients seeking breast fat transfer often do so as this procedure does not involve inserting foreign materials into the body — which is a key consideration for those who prefer an autologous option, especially after implant removal.

At the core of this body treatment procedure in Sydney lies liposuction. By removing fat areas where it is present in relative excess, Dr David Ong and his medical team can alter one area while replacing volume in other areas of the body. Through this approach, we can harvest and carefully process the extracted fat in a controlled manner to optimise its viability for reintroduction into the body.

A consultation with one of our medical practitioners is required to determine if you are a suitable candidate for fat transfer. In accordance with pre-operative assessment protocols, a referral from your GP is also necessary prior to your appointment.

Liposuction

Liposuction is an innovative, clinically proven permanent body treatment procedure in Sydney used to remove localised fat deposits from specific body areas to alter an individual’s physique. This approach may be appropriate for patients with small genetically predisposed areas of stubborn fat pockets (chins, lower abdomen) that have not responded to lifestyle measures such as diet and regular physical activity.

This body treatment procedure is always performed in a sterile environment under general anaesthesia at an accredited day hospital. Following surgery, patients are required to wear a post-operative compression garment to manage swelling. They are also given detailed post-operative care instructions to ensure a smooth recovery, minimise the risk of complications and garner an optimal aesthetic outcome. While recovery timelines vary and the full effect of this body treatment takes three to six months, multiple areas may be addressed in one procedure; however, this can depend on individual goals and the extent of fat removal required.

Whether your aim is to address concerns around your chin, upper arms, waist or thighs, surgical liposuction may be suitable for those seeking to permanently remove excess pockets of fat from targeted areas of the body and achieve shape change.

A GP referral and an in-clinic consultation are required to gauge if you are an eligible candidate for this body treatment procedure in Sydney.
