Everything you’ve wanted to ask about professional chemical peels, answered.
If we had to name the treatment our patients ask the most questions about before booking, it would be professional peels. And we completely understand why. The word ‘chemical’ alone is enough to give pause, and when you layer on years of mixed messaging, horror stories about harsh peels, social media before-and-afters, uncertainty about downtime, it’s no wonder people want to understand exactly what they’re signing up for.
So rather than a standard treatment overview, we wanted to answer the questions we hear most often in the treatment room. Honestly, and in plain language.
What actually is a professional chemical peel?
At its most basic, a professional peel is a clinician-applied solution that accelerates the skin’s natural cell turnover process. The skin sheds and renews itself constantly, and a professional peel speeds that up, encouraging the outermost layer of the skin to exfoliate more efficiently and make way for fresher, healthier cells underneath.
What makes a professional peel different from an at-home exfoliant is the formulation. The actives used in professional-grade peels, acids, enzymes, and combinations thereof, work at concentrations that aren’t available in over-the-counter skincare. That’s why the results are more noticeable, and why they should be performed by a trained clinician rather than at home.
At Studio Aesthetica, we use PCA SKIN’s professional peel range. We chose this range specifically because it offers formulations suited to every skin type, from the most sensitive and compromised through to resilient, congested, or heavily pigmented skin, and everything in between.
Does it hurt? Will my skin actually peel off?
This is probably the question we get most often, and we always appreciate it because it tells us someone is being honest about what they’re worried about.
The short answer: no to both.
Most professional peels involve a mild tingling or warming sensation during application, which is entirely normal and settles quickly. There’s no pain involved. After treatment, some patients experience mild redness for a few hours, similar to a light flush.
As for visible peeling, this depends entirely on the formulation we use. Several of our treatments, including The No-Peel Peel and Enzymatic Treatment, involve no visible shedding at all. The skin renews beneath the surface without any outward sign. For more active formulations, some patients notice light, subtle flaking in the days following treatment, nothing dramatic, and nothing that would stop you going about your normal life. In fact, both of our studio peel packages, The Peel and The Signature Peel, are designed with minimal to no downtime in mind.
I’ve never had a peel before. Is it safe to start?
Absolutely, and in many ways, now is the ideal time. One of the things we value most about our PCA peel range is that it includes formulations specifically designed for first-time patients and those with sensitive or reactive skin.
For someone who has never had a professional peel before, we would typically start with our Enzymatic Treatment. Rather than using acids, this formulation relies on naturally derived enzymes to gently dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells, encouraging surface renewal without any disruption to the skin’s barrier. It’s also our go-to recommendation for patients with rosacea or compromised barrier function because it calms and clarifies while building skin resilience over time.
Every patient who comes to us for a first peel receives a thorough skin assessment before we do anything. We want to understand your history, your current skin condition, and what you’re hoping to achieve, and that’s how we choose the right formulation for you, not a generic approach.
What skin concerns can peels actually address?
More than most people realise. Across our PCA peel range, we can target:
• Pigmentation and sun damage, including age spots, post-inflammatory pigmentation, and uneven tone from sun exposure.
• Acne and congestion, where peels help clear pores, reduce surface bacteria, and improve skin clarity.
• Dehydration and dullness, particularly well-addressed by The Signature Peel’s oxygen and booster steps
• Textured or thickened skin, where regular exfoliation hasn’t been able to make a dent.
• Sensitive and rosacea-prone skin, addressed with our gentler enzyme-based options.
• General maintenance and skin health, keeping the complexion bright, clear, and functioning well.
What matters most is that the peel is matched to your specific concern. A peel that’s right for congestion isn’t necessarily the right choice for active rosacea. That’s exactly why customisation is central to how we work.
What’s the difference between The Peel and The Signature Peel?
These are our two studio peel packages, and the difference comes down to depth of experience and how much time you have.
The Peel ($200, 45 minutes) combines your customised peel with LED light therapy. The LED step supports skin recovery post-peel, calms any reactivity, and enhances the brightening result. It’s a complete, effective treatment in its own right, and it’s what we’d recommend for someone who wants a reliable, no-fuss refresh before an event, or as a regular maintenance visit in between more intensive treatment.
The Signature Peel ($300, one hour) takes that foundation and layers in two additional steps: oxygen therapy and an advanced skin booster. The oxygen treatment infuses a revitalising, hydrating boost after the peel, particularly beneficial for dehydrated or dull complexions. The booster is selected specifically for your skin concern on the day, whether that’s brightening, hydration, or calming. The result is a more comprehensive treatment with a noticeably more restorative feel.
Both have minimal to no downtime, and both begin with a customised peel tailored to your skin. The Signature Peel simply offers more.
How often should I have a peel, and when will I see results?
For most patients, we recommend a peel every two to four weeks as part of an ongoing skin programme. Skin renewal is a continuous process, and regular treatments maintain momentum and allow results to build over time.
That said, many patients come to us for a single treatment before a special occasion, or to complement other treatments they’re already receiving. Peels work well both as standalone appointments and as part of a broader skin plan.
In terms of results: most patients notice brighter, more refreshed skin immediately after their first treatment. For concerns like pigmentation or persistent congestion, meaningful improvement typically builds across a course of four to six sessions. We’ll always be honest with you about realistic expectations during your consultation.
Can I combine a peel with my laser treatment?
Yes, and this is one of our favourite combinations. A customised peel can be incorporated as Step 1 of both our Signature Studio Glow and Signature Studio Brightening laser facial treatments. The peel replaces the standard exfoliation stage, preparing the skin and clearing the surface before the laser does its work. The result is enhanced penetration and a more thorough outcome overall.
If you’re already coming in for one of these treatments and you haven’t tried adding a peel, it’s worth discussing with your clinician at your next appointment.
A final word
Professional peels are one of the most consistently underestimated treatments in aesthetic medicine. They’re often overshadowed by lasers and injectables, but for many skin concerns, especially pigmentation, congestion, and overall skin health, they deliver results that are difficult to achieve any other way.
If you’ve been curious but uncertain, we hope this has helped. The best starting point is always a conversation. Book a consultation, tell us what’s on your mind, and we’ll find the right approach for your skin.
We can’t wait to welcome you to the Studio.
